Self Reflection paper on culture can be describe into 4 different parts, Describe, Interpret, Evaluate and Plan.
Lecture on culture in our class helps me a lot to understand about different kinds of culture. From this lesson I became able to learn about the elements of culture like, symbols, language, norms, values and belief. I have also learned about the vital role of culture in the progress of our society.
Culture is a set of inherited lifestyle from our forefathers which represents our ways of thinking, acting and material objects. These all influences our ways of living, ways of acting and indicates what we own. It is linked to our past and provides guidance to our future.
Moreover, the word culture refers to a comparatively particular way of living of a group of people. It consists of different type of cultural elements like, symbols, language, norms, values, belief mores and folk ways (j.Macionis).
Symbols are anything that is used for a particular meaning s recognized by people of a specific culture (j.Macionis). Language is a set of symbols through which people can communicate with each other (j.Macionis). Norms are the rules by which the behaviors of members of a society are guided. Values are culturally defined standards that help people to decide which is desirable, good and beautiful for social living (j.Macionis). Beliefs are those specific thoughts which indicate what is right and what is wrong (j.Macionis).
This was an excellent experience to learn about how cultures are formed.
Inherited cultural background divides people into different groups.
For example, in my country Pakistan, there are five big cultures having different sub culture too. These all cultures posses different lifestyle, symbols, norms, values, beliefs and the major thing is the language.
These all components are coming from generation to generation through enculturation that is a process which starts with our birth. Parents, childhood’s mates, schools, religious institutions and government agencies are the primary source of cultural inheritance.
Culture plays most important role in the success of an individual as well as an organization to their goal (Robbins). An organization with a diverse culture background employee has great exposure to done a task. Each employee has different method to perform a task. In this way you can select that method which will be cost effective and efficient (Robbins).
For example, in my country Pakistan people use a unique method to water plants in most warm areas. They hold one and half litter plastic bottle filled with water with stem of plant by losing its cock. Through this water falls in drops after every five to seven seconds. This is our culture we don’t spend huge money to develop a complete underground water pipe system to water plants. There is another example relating to cultural difference. In our country we can’t call a teacher from their name; we call them by their title.
According to my own experience, when I came to foreign country as a student, I have to face culture shock. It was sudden changes which have snatched my identity and my life style too. But after learning in class about culture, I realize it is a process of adaptation to a new society. Using a new language indicates that your new membership in culture context. If there is change in your language it means that there will be change in your identity and social relationship. After spending few weeks in new culture I have become the part of this culture. Adopting new cultures help me to survive at my work place where cultural diversity exists. Understanding about new cultures provides great help to perform a good job. (Words 601)
